Day 46: Gleek Out!

February 15th, 2011

Today was relatively short-lived and simple. I woke up at 8, registered for classes, and then went back to sleep. I woke up again and then changed my classes to Alethia’s suggestions and then went to work, went to Pines to eat with Geetha, & then the library shortly thereafter to do my work. Apparently highlighting a long list of papers was deemed necessary by my boss at EH&S, so I brought my work with me to Geisel, and performed hours of rigorous highlighting. I then went to a productive UCSD Cares meeting, class, and then to Amy’s place to watch Glee. There I was again the third wheel while Amy and her man Brian rigorously watched the television screen. I quickly took a picture for my blog there. After, I went home, and watched some Jeopardy with Amul. Tyler came barging in expecting to watch Glee, but I told him he was an hour too late. We watched half an episode of Jeopardy (I couldn’t find the second part online). Me & Tyler then discussed A.S. election strategies as we prepared to “Flush the John.” I finished out the night interviewing Earle for my essay, working on my essay, and finishing the Jeopardy episode I set out to watch.

President Barack Obama paid tribute to “the best of who we are and who we aspire to be” in awarding America’s highest civilian honor Tuesday to 15 people, including former President George H.W. Bush, poet Maya Angelou, baseball slugger Stan Musial and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. At a White House ceremony attended by most of the honorees, Obama spoke of why each was receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which the White House said is “presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Go America!
On February 15th, The UK banks will reopen today as the British Government launches the changeover to the new decimal currency system across the country.
The familiar pound (£), shilling (s) and pence (d) coins are to be phased out over the next 18 months
The new currency has been in circulation since 1968 but prices have still been marked in shillings and pence
The new system will divide the pound into units of ten, including half, one, two, five, ten and 50 pence denominations. ( The 20 pence piece was not introduced until 1982. )
Below is Rough Conversion Guide
The New 1 Pound Coin = 1 Old Pound = 20 Shillings = 240 old pence
The New 50 Pence Coin = 10 shillings = 120 old pence
The New 20 Pence Coin = 4 shillings = 48 old pence
The New 10 Pence Coin = 2 shillings = 24 old pence
The new 5 Pence = One Shilling or 12 old Pence
The old tanner 6 old pence will not be replaced
The old Half Crown = 2 shillings and 6 pence will not be replaced.
Yay Mother England <24.

P.S.: “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” – Abraham Lincoln
