Day 103: Panopticon

April 13th, 2011

The “Panopticon”, as designed by Jeremy Bentham, is a type of prison designed to allow an observer to observe (-opticon) all (pan-) prisoners without the incarcerated being able to tell whether they are being watched, thereby conveying what one architect has called the “sentiment of an invisible omniscience.” Subsequently, prisoners who think they are constantly being watched but who aren’t actually being watched are always on their good behavior. Great concept, isn’t it?! Seeing as some people consider the UC system a prison (not really my particular kind of view), I felt like I was in a prison staring straight at the camera which observes Price Center behavior, stuck in my own mini-Panopticon world – See yourself here: http://ucenstudent.ucsd.edu/WebCam.aspx .

In terms of what happened today, I woke up at 8 AM (Wow, early), went to my Sustainability Internship, went outside to get Geetha to snap a picture of me using the price center website (Play Where’s Waldo and try to find me, fools!), went to work, ate lunch at Panda Express, watched 4 episodes of Degrassi at Geisel and “studied”, ate dinner at Goodies (where I bumped into Alex and Amul), went to ICRA where my Memorial Day Event got shut down forcing me to join the Price is Right/Res-Council Dinner Commitees, and then stubbornly went to the library with Geetha & Later Bee-John. I ended the night back at home after chilling at Geetha’s place playing Cut the Rope, and my personal favorite “Coindozer”.
