I had the greatest conversation with my boss today. We talked about a wide range of issues from the 2012 Presidential Election to the future of the entire planet. He asked me a pretty tough question in the form of wondering how we would sustain a world with an infinite population (and thus growing consumption), but a finite supply of resources. We pondered over what natural resource would fundamentally cause the next world war. I didn’t know how answer – but I do know economics tells us that something bad is likely to happen in our lifetime (when demand far exceeds supply).
He would email me later that day “Good job! It is good thing you are thinking about this stuff. It is a complex world and it needs all the help we can get to find answers.” So proud.
Furthermore, on March 12th, I had another conversation about my boss regarding my not-so-recent breakup. He gave lots of good advice, eventually emailing me at the end of the day saying: ” It gets easier in time. I know it can really knock the wind out of you but just know that someone else will come along…”
(:
Out of curiosity, why did your boss say clean water? Forgot to ask. I mean, we have Brita filters (not making light of the situation, just saying)
I believe it will be peak oil (which we have already reached). Water is also a problem too, but it will not spark war between the major powers. The wealthy countries have plenty of fresh water, and no poor country will try to fight them for it. However, all the major countries are competing for fossil fuel and once it runs out, “shits going to hit the fan” (excuse my language).
I must say, you have like the best job ever. I hope you know how lucky you are.
