On July 4th, 1776, America officially was conceived through the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. John Adams made a prediction that July 2nd would be the nation’s birthday, but he was off by two days: “The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more“. Independence day, as people know it, is known for fireworks, and a heightened sense of patriotism and nationalism in the United States of America.
Sadly, the America that once was is no more. In the era of big government, endless wars, a corporate-controlled media, and the dwindling of our civil liberties, the constitutional republic envisioned by our Founding Fathers has largely dissipated. Though this is depressing in and of itself, I believe that when more and more people began waking up, our country can finally move in the right direction. The revolution lives on.
