Let’s just say for convenience sake I’m an illiterate fool. I have read my fair share of books over the year, and my top 10 list continually is changing depending on what stage I am in my life. Here they are presently, in no particular order.
1. 1984: Dystopia about a future where government controls everything you do and every way in which you think. We’re a lot closer than you think with the Patriot Act and government surveillance everywhere…. The three mantras are eerie as ever. No good movie adaptation has yet to be made, but watching V for Vendetta gives off the same much needed overtones.
2. My Brother Sam is Dead: The story of a father and a son on opposite sides of the American Revolution. It has tragedy and angst written all over it. I want them to make a movie adaptation of it eventually. I read it for a 6th grade AND 7th grade book report. TEEHEEE.
3. The Great Gatsby: Gatsby’s pursuit for Daisy has tragedy written all over it. I’m sure mostly everyone can relate to being teased in such a manner. Unrequited Love is so so sad 🙁 I hope Hollywood’s new adaptation does not ruin it, but I have a sense that it just might…. Play THE GAME HERE.
4. Captain Underpants Series: LOVED it since I was a kid. Still love them. They provided much needed comic relief from the bullies and the lack of friends I had in elementary school.
5. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe: One of the better tales in the Narnia series, which teaches the difference between right and wrong (as if we didn’t all know already)
6. Atlas Shrugged: The true tale of why capitalism works and statism fails.
7: End the Fed: A true masterpiece for anyone that needs to understand why we need to reform, audit, and eventually end the Federal Reserve System in the United States.
8. Charlotte’s Web: Tragic ending, but definitely worth a look if you want to see a spider and a pig make love. JUST KIDDING.
9. Holes: Louis Sachar really knows how to write an inspiring tale. Poor Stanley, who gets sent to dig holes in the middle of the desert after a crime he didn’t commit….. Luck sealed his fate by the end of the book though. :). Richard Kelly was asked to write a screenplay for the movie, and it ended up being terrible, dark, and depressing that the studio eventually shunned him. I’m sure you can find a copy online if you look hard enough.
10. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: YES YES YES. The Oompa Loompas always got to me in this book but Roahl Dahl surely knows how to entertain. And I love the ORIGINAL MOVIE (not the terrible remake with Johnny Depp).
