Week 12: Chastity

Alas, we reach the penultimate week by which to celebrate the moral “virtues” of Benjamin Franklin. He included chastity as a mechanism by which to refrain from having too much intercourse in any given week. Rather an odd figure during his time, Franklin engaged in sexual relations with many woman (as opposed to the typical no sex before marriage virtue celebrated by most religious fundamentalists at the time).

Society’s standards about sex are much lower in this given day and age. One night stands and “hooking up” are oh so typical for those 30 and under (and perhaps even for older demographics). In all honesty I much prefer to keep my relations as intimate as possible with only people I am in a committed relationship with. So, while many people enjoy the lustful benefits of hooking up, I have a different standard for who I push to pursue those said relations with. I wouldn’t dare judge those people and claim they’re less moral than I am by any means.

Being that I’m not currently in a relationship, it was relatively easy for me to maintain a week full of chastity. Aside from that, I also refrained from certain activities, which included watching R rated movies, and of course making raunchy jokes. I kept adult activities to a minimum, instead engaging in various acts of Candy Crush, viewings of Boy Meet World, even going to Child Abuse Training for the YMCA, as well as various community service projects. Even during the weekend I participated in volunteering at Key Club’s District Convention, where we went around patrolling hotel rooms making sure the members weren’t purpling or engaging in any illicit activity. So not only did I live a lifestyle of chastity this week, I also helped lent a hand in preventing it, and as a result, I give myself an A.

Sorry Ben Franklin, some of your morals are outdated.

Next Week: Humility. Imitate Jesus and Socrates.
