Today is the 4th of July. In any other country in the world, this wouldn’t matter, but we are in the United States of AMERICA. I’m not super nationalistic, but being that my screen name is americanjohn500, I do recognize the values this country embodies.
On July 4th, 1776, America officially was conceived (and not aborted) through the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. This was when all our Founding Fathers (who happened to be white), decided to break away from England. And rightfully so, every nation should have the ability to make it’s own decisions and set its own standards for living. I’m aware of all the economic consequences of Britain leaving the European Union, but at the end of the day it’s because they want to have more autonomy as a nation. It could be seen as their version of the American Revolution. Being that we are in an election year, with two of the worst presidential candidates (in different ways of course), it’s easy to think that the values of American democracy are dying. This is why it’s so important to educate the future citizenry of the values of our country and what it was conceived on. Here’s a video summarizing the American Revolution that I try to show my students when teaching US History.
Till our country is fixed, let’s all just sit back and have a political party.
