Day 19: Elizabeth Goodrich

Sometimes you meet a great charismatic leader that you just are in awe of. Their spirit. Their energy. Their wisdom. Their friendliness. That leader’s name is of course…. Ron Paul.

In all seriousness, I am quite glad that Elizabeth Goodrich was able to usurp her way to power to lead UCSD’s youth for Ron Paul. I remember I had some elaborate job title in that organization, which according to my LinkedIn was “Canvassing Director”. I don’t think I ever did any real canvassing.

Anyway, as dumb as the club was at times (what did we really do?), it was entertaining being in one another’s company. Not to say that I aren’t tolerant of other people’s political beliefs, but being in a room where everyone thinks the same way is kind of reassuring in a way. Libertarian is so often a “fringe” set of beliefs, and I wouldn’t say I’m nearly as libertarian as I was a Ron Paul supporter. I’m sure the same applies equally to Elizabeth.

When we first met I awkwardly asked her and her husband if they were brother and sister (since they had the same last year). What a valuable lesson I learned – not to ask questions like that. Our experiences in the club brought us closer together, most notably TABLING.

We also had random meetings. We also phonebanked, which wasn’t that fun.

We put on random events, like the Blue Republicans event, to which only people from YAL came, but it was mildly successful.

Of course, our greatest success lies in securing Ron Paul the presidency in 2012. Oh wait, that never happened….

We did bring him to UCSD though!

Despite the club eventually dying down and ending, we still hung out outside of the organization, and subsequently locked our friendship up for life. Some activities include her driving me to the dentist (how nice), us going to Phil’s BBQ (delicious), and going to their anniversary spot, Phillipes, which is nowhere nearly as good as Phil’s.

Even though we’re miles and miles apart, I’ll always remember and cherish the times we had. Here’s to what eventually transpired that election cycle.

Good luck semi-lawyering. See you soon. #26reasonswhy
