In Orange County, you can feel the disparity of wealth in different pockets of the big and large cities. People often associate “The O.C.” with wealth, when it actually has quite a big amount of poverty and poorer areas (Stabba Ana, Garbage Grove, Anacrime, etc.) Regardless of this, I will always consider Orange County home, because it is not too urban like Los Angeles while not at all too rural like say… Iowa. It’s suburbia at its best, which ultimately would make it a great place to DIE. Los Angeles… not so much.

Half of my day was spent relaxing at home, which intertwined elements of eating (Pho), drinking (Seven Leaves), playing (boardgames), and overly simulating myself through the usage of online mediums.

Today’s popular destination involved Irvine, one of the most the privileged cities of wealth and luxury in Orange County. After spending a while walking around University town centers, I couldn’t help but have flashbacks back to my college days. I miss it, only because adulthood could get rather dry and repetitive. I only imagine how different my life would have been had I chosen to go to UCI to UCSD. I could have been a completely different person with a completely different career and a completely different life had I chosen that route. Funny how life works sometimes.

Afterwards, we relaxed for a bit at Yardhouse at Irvine Spectrum in an effort to unwind before the big event of the night, the big event of course being seeing Dunkirk in IMAX 70mm. American restaurants are a lot bigger than European ones (and also, relatively more expensive, at least in terms of alcohol); that’s one thing I noticed being away for so long.

I did my research. Apparently there is a difference between various forms of IMAX, Irvine Spectrum being the closest theater to me that has “real 70mm” IMAX and not a fake digital projection of it. The movie was pretty good, but I think with an 11PM showing we were both way too tired to appreciate everything and ended up falling asleep at pretty important intervals. In re-examining the plot and significance of the movie though, I think Nolan did a fine job and I hope he directs more movies in the future. If he can maintain his stellar track record with great movies such as The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Memento, The Prestige, and Inception, he could eventually become as big as Hitchcock. I have no doubts in his directorial abilities.
