2nd grade was interesting. I became a very shy student and rarely participated. Even today, in my interactions with shy, introverted students, it is hard for me to “force them” to participate because I know I was once like them. If learning needs to be catered to the learning needs of all students, we need to realize that not every student is extroverted enough to participate verbally. Anyway, enough on that tangent. My 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Chee saw it a real issue that I didn’t participate, and tried her best to assimilate me into the American culture of participation. I improved slightly towards the end of the year and started raising my hand voluntarily much more often.

Good golly, I was quite dark back then. That’s an interesting sweater vest I have as well.

When I got home from school I usually watched Looney Tunes and Animaniacs with my sister. Let’s not forget my other childhood faves, Arthur and Recess. Because having fun isn’t hard, when you have a library card.

My dad often took us the Stanton Library nearby as well so we could check out books and read. In the pre-Internet era, it was obvious we were desperate for entertainment – the most obvious being in the form of books, television shows, and playing outside.

Armageddon was the number 1 movie of the year. I have yet to see it. Celion Dion’s “My Heart will Go On” was the number 1 song. My heart clearly yearns for that hit again, as it does for the simplicity of life 1998 was, ultimately.
