“Yellow Panther” Review

I usually don’t post movie reviews onto my blog because who the hell really wants to read my opinion of my movie? However, sometimes a movie resonates so much with you that you just have to talk about it. In this case, it is the movie “Crazy Rich Asians”, which I will subsequently refer to now forever as “Yellow Panther.”

Having read the book a few months ago, I wasn’t that impressed by the way the story was written. It’s literally been a week since I’ve watched the movie, and yet the memory of it still sticks with me for some reason. Here’s why I would definitely recommend watching this movie (for anyone):

  1. It’s good to see diversity in movies. Growing up I was so used to watching white people on television, especially fall in love. Corey and Topanga. Ross and Rachel. Ted Mosby and “The Mother”. And literally every other show on television. As much as I don’t care for forced diversity, it’s good to finally see some Asians on the big screen for a big Hollywood release.
  2. The movie is humorous, but not too over the top. I especially like the humor in the movie because it is not too ridiculous like other R-rated movies, but rather more of a calm and slow burn type of comedy. I was of course impressed by awkwafina’s performance the most and her jokes had the best punches.
  3. It sells you the concept of love. I’m pretty cynical when it comes to love. Having once been a hopeless romantic, the reality kind of sets in as you get older that it just might never happen for you, but that’s okay. And yet, at the same time, there are instances in the movie where you truly believe the characters are in love. Especially during the wedding scene when they look into each other’s eyes. When a movie can sell you that concept, you end up appreciating it much more. In a lot of ways it was similar to the scene from the Simpsons Movie where Marge leaves Homer Simpson, triggering a whirlpool of emotions.
  4. The soundtrack is amazing, especially when a Chinese cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow” emerges. I didn’t know it was Coldplay until after the movie, but I recognized the “theme” and it definitely fit the overall tone of the movie. It meshes well with that particular scene of that movie (which I won’t spoil here) and would have brought me to tears if I wasn’t so manly.
  5. It will leave a lasting impression on me for years to come. I will definitely recommend it to anyone that either believes or does not believe in the concept of love.
