I was struck with a poignant realization yesterday when one of my students mentioned that her mom graduated in the class of 2007, making her only a year older than myself. As I listened to her speak, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of time bearing down on me, making me feel older than ever before.

But amidst this feeling of nostalgia, I found a silver lining. I asked my student to dig up old yearbook photos of me from her mother’s collection. It was an opportunity to revisit my past and see how far I’ve come.

Looking at these photos brought back memories, both positive and negative, of my high school experience. I recall volunteering, hanging out with friends, and yet feeling cynical and emo about everything. It was a reminder that our past experiences shape who we are today and will always follow us wherever we go.

So as I reminisce about my younger self, I’m reminded to cherish the present and make the most of every moment. Instead of feeling old, I choose to embrace the wisdom and experience that come with age.
